Introduction About Xinjiang Medical University
Located in the north of Urumqi city and established in 1956, With over 60 years of existence, Xinjiang Medical University （XJMU） is a unique comprehensive medical university full of ethical endemic and regional character, including that of its predecessors, Xinjiang Medical College, and Xinjiang Chinese Medical College. Approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education in 1998, XJMU has officially developed into a large and comprehensive medical university for teaching, treatment, and expert scientific research.
There are around 21,818 students including 600+ international students. In 2006, XJMU was proudly awarded “Excellent” in undergraduate teaching standards evaluated by the Ministry of Education in China. It is also approved amongst the first group of institutions to admit international medical students in 2009. After being an “Advanced International Education Organization”, it has been named as “Modeling Base for International Education”. In 2013, the university gained good result in the international M.B.B.S. undergraduate education assessment and the scale of international medical education become as the leading pioneer at the national level.
They provide all levels of programs including undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate degrees, as well as language training and Chinese/Western Medicine training courses. International students, hospital staff and medical researchers from various countries are warmly welcomed to XJMU and our affiliated hospitals for research and academic exchange. XMU comprises eight medical and allied colleges: The Medical College, Public Health College, Traditional Medicine College, Basic Medical Sciences College, Pharmacy College, Nurses Training College, Continuing Education College, and Vocational College.
They also work closely with other institutions, including the University of Birmingham, Dow University of Health Sciences, Frontier Medical College, Harvard Medical International, Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 University; only to mention a few.
Education at Xinjiang Medical University
Xinjiang Medical University attaches great importance to the development of teaching staff and takes great measures in developing and strengthening them. The staff and teaching faculty is made up of more than 15,070 people, among them, 914 are academic teachers and 977 are clinical teachers. Among medical universities in the People’s Republic of China, Xinjiang Holds good ranking in Chinese Universities in Medicine as per the annual list of China’s top universities by China University Assessment. Over 50,000 students have been educated at XMU. Xinjiang Medical University is affiliated with all hospitals in the region and, as of 2010, manages 40 clinical positions throughout these centers.
XJMU owns 2 key laboratories supported by the provincial government and Education Ministry, 4 laboratories supported by the Xinjiang regional government and 10 regional level research institutes.
The university built a new library building which now covers 16,000 m2 and has over 1.07 million books. There are more than 1,300 periodicals and journals available in Chinese and other languages and there is a connection to Partners Harvard Medical International’s library database. The library seats more than 2500 in the reader’s area and over 350 in the electronic library access area.
The university provides on-campus hostel to the international students. the hostel building equips with electrical lift. Two persons share a room with air conditioner, attached bathroom, color TV, telephone, bed with required amenities and furniture, free hot water heater, refrigerate, internet access, public laundry and kitchen, Students are required to pay the electricity and water they used which will be around $ 5 per month for reasonable usage. International students can take their food in the Canteen according to their own food habits.
Warm summers, with a July daily average of 23.7 °C (74.7 °F), and cold winters, with a January daily average of −12.6 °C (9.3 °F). The annual average temperature is 6.90 °C (44.4 °F). It has shorter spring and autumn, and longer winter and summer. There are two hours, the time difference between Xinjiang and Beijing.
Xinjiang Medical University campus has been completely updated and modernized and a library, canteens, hospitals and training centers including a number of buildings from the late Russian era. The experimental laboratories include modern bio-information processing systems and models. Every floor has a central area of reading for daily readers; the fifth and sixth floors have dedicated thesis areas for doctoral students.
The Government of the People’s Republic of China announced a scholarship program that seeks to award students who perform well in the Faculty of Medicine and a passing score on the HSK band 3 (or above) is to be attained by scholarship holders within one year of admission.
Since 1998, XMU has won 58 provincial and ministerial level scientific research awards. It is listed among the top colleges and universities performing scientific research in the Autonomous Region. It is the only institution in China to win the “Chinese Medical Academic Award” in four consecutive years. XMU topped the universities that were being observed by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
