Introduction About Xi'an Jiaotong University

XJTU is a key university which is directly administered by the Chinese Education Ministry and is one of the oldest current institutions of higher education in China. The predecessor of XJTU was Nanyang College, which was founded in 1896 in Shanghai and renamed Jiaotong University in 1921. In 1956, the main body of Jiaotong University was moved to Xi'an according to the decision issued by the State Council, and was formally named Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1959, which was listed as a national key university. Xi'an Jiaotong University, as one of the first universities entering the seventh and eighth five-plan, as well as China's "211 Project" and “985 Project”, is selected to be developed into a global first-class university. In April 2004, approved by the State Council, the original Xi'an Medical University and original Shaanxi Institute of Finance and Economics were integrated into Xi'an Jiaotong University.

Currently Xi'an Jiaotong University is a comprehensive research university with scientific focus. It is composed of 10 branches of learning, namely: science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, philosophy, education and art. The university, currently, consists of 26 full-time colleges and schools, 8 schools for undergraduates and 12 affiliated teaching hospitals. XJTU boasts a high-level staff of 5,561, including 2,861 full-time teachers, among which are 1,700 professors and associated professors. XJTU has 25 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, of which 14 are doubled-hired academicians.

There are 6 national-level teachers, 47 Changjiang Scholars, 34 Outstanding Young Investigator Award laureates, 16 national experts with outstanding contribution to the country, 23 nation-level candidates of the National Talents Project, and the 21st Century National Talents Project, 19 leaders of the Program for Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team, 234 personnel of 21st Century Excellent Talents Training Plan proposed by the Ministry of Education, and 535 experts who have made outstanding contributions and enjoy special governmental allowances.

In this new century, Xi'an Jiaotong University continues to renew itself to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of higher education, domestically and internationally, gradually evolving a model of higher education that is suited to international developments, while constructing at the same time a modern scientific approach to policy-making, policy execution and supervision, so as to provide the university with a management structure meeting international standards. Together, the two lay a firm foundation for building Xi'an Jiaotong University into a top-flight international university.

Education in Xi'an Jiaotong University

Recently, with hisresearch team, Professor Zhang Yanpeng of the Key Laboratory of ElectronPhysics and Devices, Ministry of Education in XJTU has published a paper in theworld-class periodical--Laser Photonics Rev. [Laser Photon. Rev. 9,L1-L8 (2015), Photonic Floquet Topological Insulators in Atomic Ensembles]. Thepaper pioneered the idea of topology insulator of atom ensemble photon, expanding the research on topology insulator from the field of electricity intooptical field. The research result is of great scientific significance to therealization of a new “light modulator, photodiode and optical calculation.”

Today’s Xi’an Jiaotong University is a comprehensive research-oriented university with its focus on science and engineering. Its programs cover the fields of science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, literature and arts, law, philosophy, and education. It consists of 17 schools, offering 74 undergraduate programs, 199 master programs, and 114 doctoral programs.

There are more than 2,500 full-time faculty members, dedication to both teaching and research. The current faculty includes 16 members of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as members of the American Academy of Engineering, the British Royal Academy, and the Third-World Academy of Science. As one of the first listing universities, the university has been authorized to accept international students of Chinese Government Scholarship since 1950. Up to now, the university has trained over 5,000 international students from more than 52 countries and regions.

The Thermal Spray Laboratory (TSL-XJTU) was found in 1993. The laboratory is attached to the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong University. It is one of research groups in the State Key Laboratory for Mechanical Strength of Materials. The vision of the TSL is to perform the cutting-edge R&D in thermal spray field in terms of both fundamental researches and application researches. The application researches are aimed at finding basic solutions for various industries through development of High Performance Protective Coatings including superhard wear resistance coating, corrosion resistance coatings, thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for different severe operating conditions. Typical coating materials include WC-Co and Cr3C2-NiCr cermet, ZrO2-based oxide (YSZ, ScSZ) ceramics, intermetallic compound such as FeAl and NiAl systems.

The laboratory has wide connections with famous thermal spray labs around world, especially with the thermal spray center of Osaka University (previously directed by Prof. Ohmori), Japan, LERMPS (Laboratory for Research and Development of Materials Surface Processing) of UTBM (Technological University of Belfort-Montbeliad), France (Directed by Prof. C. Coddet), and Thermal Spray Lab of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (directed by Prof. K.A. Khor). The laboratory's projects have been also supported by foreign companies, including IHI, Japan , Honeywell , USA , Plasma Geken, Japan .

The Xi’an Jiaotong University Library originates from Nanyang Public School Library, which was set up in Shanghai in 1896. In October 1919, the main library building was completed and was named as the Shanghai Industrial Specialized School Library of Communication Ministry, and renamed as the Jiaotong University Library in 1921. In 1956, Jiaotong University moved its campus to Xi’an with most of the faculty and 92% books of the library. Therefore, there were two branches of Jiaotong University Library established in Xi’an and Shanghai separately in September 1957. Two years later, the Xi’an Campus and the Shanghai Campus of Jiaotong University became separate universities, so the Library was officially named the Xi’an Jiaotong University Library.

The Document Information Center in the Northwest Region of China Academic Library and Information System (CALIS) and the secretariat of Shaanxi College Library and Intelligence Service Committee are both located at the library of XJTU. The library also takes charge of the Foreign Textbook Center and the Workstation for Sci-tech Project Consultation and Research Findings Novelty Search, which are set in our university by the Ministry of Education to serve the universities of the whole country.

Shaanxi borders Shanxi (E, NE), Henan (E), Hubei (SE), Chongqing (S), Sichuan (SW), Gansu (W), Ningxia (NW), and Inner Mongolia (N). In terms of number of bordering provincial-level divisions, Shaanxi ties Inner Mongolia.

Due to its large span in latitude, Shaanxi has a variety of climates. Under the Köppen climate classification, the northern parts, including the Loess Plateau, have either a cold arid (Köppen BWk) or cold semi-arid (Köppen BSk), with cold and very dry winters, dry springs and autumns, and hot summers. The area known as Guanzhong is mostly semi-arid, though there are a few areas with a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cwa), with cool to cold winters, and hot, humid summers that often see early-season heatwaves. The southern portion is much more humid and lies in the humid subtropical zone, with more temperate winters and long, hot, humid summers. Annual mean temperature is roughly between 8 to 16 °C (46 to 61 °F), with January temperatures ranging from −11 to 3.5 °C (12.2 to 38.3 °F) and July temperatures ranging from 21 to 28 °C (70 to 82 °F).
